Our Most Common Material Tests We Perform Daily
Abrasion Testing is used to test the abrasive resistance of solid materials such as metals, composites, ceramics, thick coatings, etc. The intent of Abrasion Testing is to produce data that will rank materials in their resistance to scratching abrasion under a specific set of conditions.
is the bond strength measurement of a coating to a substrate. Adhesion testing is often associated with adhesives, tape, sealants, laminates, electronics, cosmetics, medical device packaging, general packaging seal strength and applications where bond strength measurement is critical for research and quality control applications.
- Chemical Resistance
Chemical Resistance Testing is utilized for evaluating the resistance of coatings or plastics to various test fluids. Chemical Resistance testing is carried out by immersing samples in various test fluids.
- Color Fastness
Color Fastness is the resistance of a fabric or coated material to change in its color characteristics or to transfer its colorants to adjacent materials. Color fastness testing can help ensure the materials colors stay fresh and vibrant after many uses.
Crocking refers to the rubbing off of color from Upholstery such as woven fabrics, coated fabrics, direct glue wall coverings, wrapped panels, and drapery when subjected to abrasion, one such test is the AATCC 8-2001 test. This is the “American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) test, which uses a standard white cotton fabric that is rubbed against the surface of the test fabric.
ASTM D1505 is the standard test method for density of plastics, which can also be extended to high density materials if suitably dense liquids can be selected.
Foam Testing is often conducted with product flammability or durability testing. The most commmonly referenced test method for urethane foam is the ASTM D3574.
- Scratch and Mar
The Scratch and Mar Test
is used to measure the relative resistance of a material surface to scratching, marring, gouging, scraping, engraving, and other physical damage not classified as ordinary wear. It’s mots commonly referred to as a five-finger scratch and mar test and most often used to evaluate plastics.
are used to measure the tendency for plastic or elastomeric materials to volatize substances which can condense and collect on other surfaces when in use. This test is used to evaluate materials used in automotive vehicle interiors.
Gloss can be affected by environmental factors such as weathering or surface abrasion, thus can be useful in product development, process development and performance testing.
Grayscale is used for assessing the color shading in between products and the customer’s approval sample among pieces in production. There are two types of grayscale, one for evaluating color modification and the other for evaluating staining.
Impact Tests are a method that measures a material’s toughness, ability to absorb energy and brittle fracture resistance.
Odor Tests identify odors that are complex and varied caused by the presence of volatile chemicals in the air. There are three common test methods to evaluate odors in textiles: antimicrobial testing, gas chromatography, and wear trials.
Paint Testing is a critical part of product evaluation for components and materials, and we can assist with regulatory compliance texting, failure analysis, process-evaluation and more.
Spectrophotometry is a standard test to measure light absorption or the amount of chemicals in a solution.
- Temperature and Heat
Combining High temperatures
with our testing, we’re able to provide data about safe operating limits, material characteristics, lifespan and more for products and materials.
of plastics is used to measure the force to break a plastic sample and the extent to which the plastic stretches or elongates to that breaking point.
- Variable surface
Weathering Tests simulate extreme weather conditions that speed up the weathering process to help understand the influence of weather on the performance and durability of materials and components.
